Shields...

Here are 2 of the shields from my portfolio that I worked on this week. Don't worry, Brian, I'm also working on the BR scene that you suggested. ;-)

  1. I can't wait!

Great texturing and cuts on the shields. I love the concept on the Good shield. The evil shield doesn't fit in the concept though. You have this awesome golden dragon on the good shield but the evil shield doesn't have any creature on it to follow that concept through. The style of the evil shield does match the evil sword well enough, but I think you could push your concepts further if you synergize the good and evil implements as well. It doesn't necessarily have to be an evil dragon, but some kind of opposing evil creature.

Thanks for the updates! I'm enjoying the designs.

  2. If you're going for something standard, maybe a wrought-iron or rusty iron dragon or devilish/gargoylish wizard (the only archfoe of a dragon I can think of besides a knight).

Think about this though: In Geoffrey of Monmouth's "History of the Kings of Britain," a red dragon battles a white dragon in Merlin's prophecy. It seems somewhat odd that the Britons are symbolized by the red though as this color stereotypically carries connotations of war, promiscuity, and general deviltry, whilst conversely white has traditionally represented light and puritanism. You could try a marble dragon on one and rusty red iron on the other. (I don't make any opinion of which would be the "good" and "evil" colors here.)

Of course you could just leave the "evil" shield as is, and it still signifies draconian tyrrany to me - no ornamentation or finery as these traits are too specific, too individually expressive, frivolities... in other words, strip it down to its simple and practical elements. "Civil liberties? What the hell is THAT supposed to mean?!"

  3. Wonderful advice! Brian- I thought the same thing, but I thought it was passable, you busted me. I was going along the lines of what Jeremy said, stripping it down to basic form and let the silhouette speak for itself, but a few other friends have remarked on its lack of ornamentation. So I will go back take it back to the board and push it further. Thanks for your honest critique and suggestions. I will not disappoint.

  4. These are wonderful! Everything I wanted to comment has already been said, but your attention to detail really shines in these =)
